Work life balance: free your mind by saying no!

Welcome to the next installment of Free Your Mind Friday, where we focus on cultivating a MAGIC mindset that is going to get us where we want to be in life.

Last time we encouraged you to peek inside your Too Hard Basket and take action.

This week in the quest for work life balance, its…..wait for it……… choosing to say "no".

Are you too busy for work life balance?

In the quest for work life balance, the number one challenge seems to be having to much to do. There are constant demands on your time: not just those that come from your business (marketing, relationship building, product creation, service delivery etc.) but also from your personal commitments which could well include a desire to stay healthy, look after relationships….. And for those women who are running a business AND have a family, time is particularly precious.

Now we all know, anecdotally at least, that women find it hard to say no. This stems from a desire to build great relationships and possibly to demonstrate our capability. While some argue that women need to free themselves from this tendancy to always say yes, others argue that its not always a bad thing.

Could there be room for “no” in creating work life balance?

Regardless, if you are on a quest for work life balance, saying “no” could get you on your way. I'm not suggesting that you choose no all the time, but it is important to recognise where your boundaries lie. And of course in each instance you will need to weigh up the feeling of freedom you may get from saying no with the impacts that may have on other people – but sometimes you do simply need to put yourself first!

In addition to this, you need to ask if you want to be one of those people who always talks about, thinks about and yearns for work life balance, or do you want to be someone who makes it happen in your own life. If you don't make it important, no-one else will.

So – today is an opportunity to practice just this!

Choose work life balance by saying no!

  • Perhaps its been on your to-do list for a while and you keep putting it off because you really don't' want to do it.

  • Maybe its something you said yes to out of obligation rather than real desire.

  • Or are you already clear on what you need to say “no” to, in order to free up your time and generate a sense of work life balance for today!

Whatever it is, Just Do It!
