A Simple Step Towards Stress Management: Lifting the Lid on the Too Hard Basket

Want to FREE YOUR MIND this Friday?

Welcome to the 4th installment of Free Your Mind Friday, where we focus cultivating a MAGIC mindset that is going to get us where we wanna be in life. Check out post #3 which looked at how Making a Difference can Free your Mind.

Do you ever notice that there are one or two items on your to-do list that never get done, and keep getting shifted from day to day?

This certainly happens on my list – for whatever reason certain tasks feel too overwhelming, or I don't know where to start – so it feels easier to just ignore them and shift them to tomorrows list rather than taking action. In other words, they're going in the Too Hard Basket.

However I'm starting to realise that rather than making things easier, this Too Hard Basket occupies MORE mental energy. Although its easier in the short term not to think about them, ultimately those tasks still need to be done, and they hang over you.

So today's Free Your Mind Friday message is all about a stress management technique, taking action!

 Today's challenge is:

to lift the lid on YOUR Too Hard Basket and peer in.

What is one thing that you continue to put into the “too hard basket”. Take the first one that pops into your head. Today's challenge is to do it. Now. Even if you can't see it through to completion today, take at least one step towards making it happen and work out when and how you WILL complete it.

And then please let us know about it! We want to help you celebrate when you take a big breath and plunge in, because ultimately it will free your mind.

And because I can't rightfully talk about this without doing it myself, I'm off to take action. My biggest Too Hard Basket item is (drumroll please…..) making a video. I have spent months coming up with great reasons as to why I can't make a video to put on our site (its too hard, where will I film it, what will be in the background, my hair isn't right today, where will I sit the camera, I might muck up my words, it will take too long, it might be embarrassing if anyone else hears me recording it…..). In fact, I suspect that it will take me one tenth of the time to actually make the video than all the time I've spent agonising over making it happen.

To be honest it scares me a little to write this cos now I am actually accountable for making it happen, but in the interests of freeing my mind before my weekend, I'm off. I'll report back once its done.

Go on, take action today! It is Friday and taking this leap into your Too Hard Basket will certainly free up your mind as you head into your weekend.

Enjoy, and please do let us know how you get on!

Update: Tuesday August 23. Here is my video! I recorded this straight after I wrote this post and have finally figured out how to put it on this page… all part of the learning process!

I've shared…. your turn now! What did you do / are you going to do to empty YOUR Too Hard Basket?

Well, I’ve done it. This is definitely a case of “Taking Imperfect Action” here. I can think of many ways in which I could make this better, however this is about Freeing My Mind, so here it is!

  • I really enjoyed this article! It related to me in so many ways. Right now I can think of a few things I have put in that “too hard basket” and I know they always pop in to my mind but I put them right back. It would be stress relieving if I could just completed them. I think right now I should work toward completing one of those tasks I have thrown in the basket.

  • I think this is very good article. When I read it, it immediately made me think of the things that I intentional put off doing. I think the concept of Free Your Mind Friday is great. This post serves as motivation to the rest of us that everyone feels the same way that we do.

    • Katy thanks for your honesty! Now that you have thought of all those things you have been putting off, which ONE will you do today?! I think many of us do this, it is pretty normal, but it can hold us back from really stepping into our full potential… so I’d love to hear how you get on!

    Katy,

This article definitely makes me think and reconsider what I put off doing. This gives me motivation to tackle things that scare me, bore me or overwhelm me. I think my stress level will drop a few notches if I simply, just do it.
