Flying Solo? Which area of your business should you grow in 2011?

Where you focus your attention, you will produce your results!

Owners and managers of small business are often multi-tasking, with huge to-do lists and myriad projects to complete. When working this way, however, it is easy to get caught on the treadmill and lose focus on the bigger picture.

When was the last time you gave your business a health check? If it’s been a while, then NOW is the time to do it!

Use this Health Check to get a clear picture of where your business stands RIGHT NOW and where it may need improvement.

Answer the questions below on a scale of 1-5

(1 Strongly disagree, 2 Disagree, 3 Neither Agree Nor Disagree, 4 Agree, 5 Strongly Agree)

  • I have a clear vision and strategy for my business

  • I communicate well with the stakeholders in my business (e.g. clients, business support services, suppliers, media)
  • I seek out opportunities to learn and grow as a businesswoman
  • I feel connected to and supported by a strong network of people in my business community
  • My work style and business systems are highly productive
  • I regularly take time to ‘step out’ of the business and focus on my big picture business vision and strategy

If you scored 4 or 5 on all of these questions, congratulations! You have many elements in place that make a healthy business.

If you scored 3 or lower on any of these questions, you and your business may not be achieving your full potential.

If you have taken the time to work through these questions, you are probably already interested in improving the health and productivity of your business. Use the momentum you have already here to analyse the areas of your business in which you most need to step it up. Then look at how you can address the gaps in your performance, so you and your business are excelling in all areas.

Whether you address these challenges on your own, or employ an expert to assist you, don’t let this information pass you by unheeded.

  • Hi Janine and Jo. Thanks for the great questionnaire. I really resonated with two areas that I know I need to work on:

    1) My business easily attracts a steady stream of my ideal type of client. Once I connect with people, they almost always hire me on – either as a personal health coach, or through my video coaching program. I am struggling with making that initial connection happen though.

    I feel connected to and supported by a strong network of people in my business community. I haven’t really done the work to build a strong network, and don’t really know where to start!


    • Hi Rachel,

      Thanks for your post! I can understand why people hire you after making that initial connection because I have experienced your health coaching myself! This is one of the most common problems presented by small business owners so you are not alone. The good news is there is a lot of information on the web now (a lot in the form of free articles, or audio teleclasses/webinars) addressing this issue, which is how to generate and ‘capture’ leads online and offline (if it fits) so that you can then build a relationship with people (aka connect with them!) and create the opportunity for them to purchase your great product!

      My next question to you would be: Do you have a clear online and offline sales and marketing strategy? Are you clear about your target market and who your ideal client is? do you understand how what you are currently doing generates leads and converts them into sales?

    Hi girls, my name is Zane’. When I saw your article in the Wairarapa newspaper, my eyes light up!
    I did the questionaire and probably about a half of my answers were under the mark 3.

    I have started my own business from scratch with an idea I had for about 2 years. I have developed my product and have presented it to the public, the response has been great. My issue is the fact that I am doing it on my own and feel like I’m lacking the marketing side of things. I have tried all the marketing tricks I know with editorials and some advertising but I feel like the business hasn’t taken off like I was hoping it would. Now I’m at a crossroad with a decision to make- to invest more in it and keep going or not. I’m passionate about my product and I really believe it has a potential but how do I get it out there, so that all my target market knows about it? My target market is rural women and they are hard to get hold of!
    I live in rural Wairarapa and deffinetly feel isolated from the business world. I would love to hear from you and perhaps get some action plan into place with your help!

    • Zane – thank you so much for your comments and from your honesty. Many people find they have similar scores to you on this questionnaire and that is the beauty of taking the time to work through it as it can really paint a clear picture for you of where you are at with your business (so remember to celebrate the areas in which you scored well too)!

      It sounds like you have a huge passion for what you are doing and that you want to keep going but perhaps need some support with direction and next steps and maybe also to look at how you can gather a network of people around you (physically or virtually!!) to support you in your business.

    Hi again Guys

    Well hmmm yes pretty much the same answers here, no ‘Need’, but also discovered Im not real clear on who my target market is, I know part of the market but not how to target them.Sales and marketing also is terribly lacking! My career background before starting this business was Tourism and Hospitality, so this is such a differant road I embark on!! Also that I have tried to use my own money without going for financial assistance has proved probably wrong! but I would say that is because of being unsure, tentative,scared and all of the above!
    I am doing your 5 day e-course and will definately do your strategy session kind of asap…
