We recently surveyed more than 60 female entrepreneurs in a bid to discover more about the issues they struggle with in their businesses.
One of the questions we asked was "What are the top reasons that you decided to start your own business?". The answers were very insightful and we are still summarising the trends, but there were a couple of popular responses:
- flexibility – I want more time with my family and children
- financial independence
- I want to be my own boss
- I saw a gap in the market
- I wanted to make a difference and do what I love
There were a bunch of others as well, but these were the most common. You've probably got some of your own to add to the list as well! These reasons are a crucial part of our business success, because they give us the drive and motivation to keep going. To overcome obstacles and feel as if it will all be worth it in the end. In short, they answer the 'WHY' of being in business.
How connected are you with your aims, or the reasons why you started out in business? More importantly….
"Are you achieving your aims?"
Are you honouring the true reasons why you decided to strike out on your own?
Are you keeping these values and motivators on your radar so you can stay on track?
We encourage you to a moment now now to stop and reflect on those questions. We all know how easy it is to become caught up in the 'doing' part of business and lose sight of your original aims, so take a few minutes now to reconnect.
Is your business taking you in the right direction?
There are no right or wrong answers here and it's important to remember that being an entrepreneur is a journey, not a destination – but we invite you to reflect on where you are at and where you are headed. Are your current actions taking closer to, or further from, your intended destination?
Perhaps you will recognise that you have already achieved some, or all, of your aims. Maybe you can see that although you aren't there yet, you are on track. Or maybe this will help you recognise that you no, you are not currently moving toward your dreams business, and have lost sight of your original aims. Either way, it's OK because…
